Test of Early Written Language - Second Edition [TEWL-2]

Wayne P. Hresko, Shelley R. Herron, Pamela K. Peak

The Test of Early Written Language - Second Edition (TEWL-2) is a revision of the widely used Test of Early Written Language. It includes two forms, each with a basic Writing and Contextual Writing subtest. The TEWL-2 is suitable for research with children age 3-0 to 3-11 and as an individual assessment instruction for children age 4-0 to 10-11. Administration requires between 30 and 45 minutes.
The TEWL-2 provides standard score quotients (mean= 100: SD= 15), NCEs, percentiles, and age equivalents. It allows items to be profiled for diagnosis of strengths and weaknesses and provides direction for interpretation and instruction.

Test of Written Language - Third Edition [TOWL-3]

Donald D. Hammill, Stephen C. Larsen

The Test of Written Language - Third Edition (TOWL-3) is completely revised for ages 7-6 through 17-11, individual or group administration. Testing time is one and one-half hours. The number of spontaneous format subtests has been reduced from five to three. All subtests begin with item 1; no basals are required. Easy items have been added to make the test more friendly to poor writers. The test includes all new normative data collected in 1994 and 1995.
Two alternative, equivalent forms (A and B) are available. Thus, examiners can evaluate student growth in writing using pretesting and post-testing that is not contaminated by memory. Percentiles, standard scores, grade equivalents, and age equivalents are provided. Internal consistency, test-retest with equivalent forms, and interscorer reliability coefficients approximate .80 at most ages, and many are in the .90s. The eight subtests of the TOWL-3 measure a student's writing competence through both essay-analysis (spontaneous) formats and traditional test (contrived) formats.
